Masaharu KAWAKATSU (Biological Laboratory, Fuji Women's College, Sapporo), Isao HORIKOSHI(Mitsukaido Dai'ichi High School, Mitsukaido), Ken'ichi MUTO (Muto Veterinary Hospital, IWAKI),Morio HAGIYA(Ayase High School, Ayase, Kanagawa Pref.), and Mitsuaki KATAYAMA(Maebashi-Minami High School, Maebashi). The vertical distribution of freshwater planarians in the southwestern part of the Kanto Region in Honshu (lat. 35°20'N. to Lat. 36°20'E. and Long. 138°30'E. to Long. 139°30'E.) was surveyed during the years 1970 to 1978. The area surveyed, the Kanto Mountains, consists of two main districts. The Tanzawa mountainous district in the southern part of the Kanto Mountains is characterized by a number of mountains of 1000 to 1600 meters in altitude. The Chichibu mountainous district in the central and northern parts of the Mountains is characterized by many mountains among which are found peaks of over-2500 meters. The main river systems include the upper streams of the Sakaho-gawa River, the Hanamizu-gawa River, the Sagami-gawa River, the Arakawa River, the Tama-gawa River, the Chikuma-gawa River (the Shinano-gawa River), and the Fuefuki-gawa River (the Fuji-gawa River). In the area surveyed, three species of freshwater planarians, Dugesia japonica japonica ICHIKAWA et KAWAKATSU, Phagocata vivida (IJIMA et KABURAKI) and Polycelis auriculata IJIMA et KABURAKI, were found. D. j. japonica was found to be common at the stations below the altitude of about 1430 meters. The upper limit of the vertical distribution of this species was 1750 meters in altitude at the source of the Fuefuki-gawa River. In the Tanzawa mountainous district, Ph. vivida was only found at the station of 1460 meters in altitude. In the Chichibu mountainous district, the species .was common at the stations within the altitude range of about 940 to 2400 meters. Pol. auriculata was found at the stations within the altitude range of about 1140 to 2190 meters in the Chichibu mountainous district. The inhabitable water temperature ranges of these three species were as follows : D. j. japonica (7.9～21.6℃) ; Ph. vivida (3.0～14.0℃) ; Pol. auriculata (4.0～13.5℃). It has been made clear that the southern limit of distribution of Ph. vivida in the southwestern part of the Kanto Region is Mt. Togadake in the Tanzawa mountainous district. Pol. auriculata is distributed on the northern side of the demarcation line drawn from Mt. Takanosu- yama, over Mt. Kumotori-yama to Mt. Obra-yama in the Chichibu mountainous district. The type of the vertical distribution in the Tanzawa mountainous district is shown as J-(JV)-V (the japonica-vivida area).
