Stature and body weight are important valuables in several indices of nutritional status that are applicable to elderly persons. However, stature and body weight are difficult or impossible to measure in the nonambulatory elderly person, especially in a home setting. Moreover, the value of height may be spurious if measured in those elderly persons with excessive spinal curvature and/or fractured vertebrae owing to osteoporosis. Gender-specific simple equations, obtained from stepwise multiple regression analysis are presented for estimating the stature and body weight of Japanese elderly persons. The stature of elderly men and women was estimated from a recumbent measure of knee height and age; the body weight of elderly men from a recumbent measure of arm circumference, calf circumference, knee height and age ; the body weight of elderly women from a recumbent measure of arm circumference, calf circumference, and knee height. The 90 per cent error bounds for the equations for stature are approximately plus or minus 7 cm for men and 8 cm for women, and those for body weight are approximately plus or minus 7 kg for men and 6 kg for women.
