A total of 152 mothers responded to\nthe survey between September and October 2010, and all had children aged between 5\nmonths and 18 months.\nA majority of respondents were part of nuclear families with 4 family members.\nMost mothers responded that they“neither liked nor disliked”preparing meals and\nmost “liked”making sweets. Most mothers also responded that they “almost never”\nused pre-prepared side dishes or instant foodstuffs.\nKitchen utensils described as frequently used included “kitchen knife”,“frying pan”,\n“cooker”, and “cutting board”,whereas those used infrequently included “a mixer”and\n“mortar and pestle”.\nWith regard to the dietary habits of the mothers, most responded that they “ate\nvegetables almost every day”and that they “ate meals prepared using oil once a day”.\nFew mothers responded that they “ate fruit every day”or that they “ate seaweed\nproducts every day”.\nWith regard to the source of information for the preparation of baby food,“magazines”\nwere ranked first, followed by “internet”, “friends”, “parents”and “dieticians”.\n“TV”was the lowest ranked source. The proportion of respondents who replied that\nthey were “sometimes troubled”when preparing baby food increased as the age of their\ninfants increased.\nCommercial baby food was used by approximately 60% of mothers. The most\ncommon reason given was “ease of preparation.” The most common reason for not\nusing commercial baby food was that the mothers “made it themselves”, followed by\n“high cost”.\nMost mothers responded that they shared the same food with their child at evening\nmeals. Mothers also shared snacks with their children over 9 months of age.
