The case has been on the rise.\nThe review on fatal child abuse incidents (namely the 11th Report) mentions\n“parents’intention to discipline their children”as one of the motive for abuse.\nJapanese Civil Code Article 822 says“A person who exercises parental authority\nmay discipline the child to the extent necessary for the care and education ”.\nHowever, the reality is that the public would be divided on whether it is\n“discipline”or “abuse”, whenever inappropriate parenting issue comes out.\nThus, in this study, I used a questionnaire method to find out the actual\ncondition of child discipline and parents’recognition to it. The samples were 231\nparents in total who have children at the age of two or older.\nThe data was processed with SPSS Statistics 22.\nAs a result,there were some parents who inflict physical punishment (ex:a slap\non head,hip,and hand)on their children or make them anxious and fearful (through\nyelling, neglect, and threatening)as a part of discipline. Those group responded “I\nagree”or “I sort of agree”to a notion of “punishment (physical or not)on children\nis necessary for discipline ”. In this point, significance was tested.\nAlso, in testing the aforesaid group and a group of parents who responded “I\nagree”or “I sort of agree”to a notion of “punishment (physical or not)on children\nis allowable, if parents have affection to them”, there was profound relevance\nbetween the groups in terms of residual analysis.\nTherefore, the study proved that approximately half of the parents recognized\npunishment, physical or not, as necessary for child discipline and even allowable if\nthey have affection to their children.\nThat show us the issue about how we should approach parents’recognition of child\ndiscipline.
