内容記述 The purpose of this study was to investigate the perceptual differences in praise
between elementary school students and teachers. Students reported their emotion
towards teachersʼ praise, motivation after teachersʼ praise, and the reason why the
teachers praised students in each of the five situations. The teachers answered the same questions for three age groups: lower graders, middle graders, and senior graders. The results revealed that their emotional and motivational perceptions were similar; however, teachersʼ and studentsʼ perceptions of the reason were different. For instance, when students were praised for learning a subject not preferred by them, the students stated that the reasons why the teachers praised them were because teachers believe that the subject would be useful for the students in the future and not learning such subjects might lead to difficulties when students grow up. As the students were going to enter junior high schools, their concerns about junior high school studies might have affected this result. On the other hand, the teachers reported that they praise students in such situations to indicate studentsʼ achievements and give them positive feedback. The results suggest that the teachers think students need praise to clarify what they can.
